Zermatt is a beautiful mountainside town nestled in the Swiss alps right underneath the world famous Matterhorn. This little ski town is also home to the Hotel Omnia, a luxury boutique hotel that would be our honeymoon stay for this stop on our trip — and what an experience it was.
Getting to Zermatt is a feat of its own. There are no cars allowed in the town limits — so we took the train from Zurich for approximately 4 hours, taking in beautiful views of the Swiss countryside and mountains as we traveled. When we finally arrived in the small but functional little train station at Zermatt, a young man was waiting for us outside the train in a cute electric buggy that whisks you straight to the hotel. A short 5 minute drive and we had entered the underground cavern that’s the hotel entrance — it felt straight out of a superhero movie.
We utilized the electric transport service quite often!
The welcome experience at the front desk was by far the best we’ve ever experienced. Lena at the front desk greeted us warmly in the cozy lobby, and escorted us out to the absolutely gorgeous front terrace, where we sipped on some champagne, snacks, and watched the Matterhorn peek out from behind the clouds. Christian, the hotel’s manager, also dropped by to say hello to us and welcome us to the property. He even remembered that we were celebrating our honeymoon, a special touch for sure. After enjoying the terrace for a while, we returned to the lobby, where Lena graciously gave us a tour of the various amenities in the hotel and showed us to our room.
We didn’t get a chance to use the gym during our stay, but I snapped some pictures
Originally, we had booked a standard room at the Omnia, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that the team had upgraded us to an absolutely massive suite! At 110 square meters, the suite had everything we needed and more, including two bathrooms, a sauna, and a telescope looking out towards the beautiful mountains. The room was warm, welcoming, and had a nice minimalist, rustic design to it. My only complaint with the room is that the design of it meant there were many places to potentially bump one’s head — I found myself constantly ducking and managed to give myself a few good knocks during the stay. Another notable addition is that the room (and other rooms in Zermatt) aren’t equipped with air conditioning, though we found the temperature to not be an issue during our stay at all.
The next morning, we headed down to the hotel’s restaurant for their complimentary breakfast for all guests. The selection included a wide variety of house made pastries, fruits, and made to order entrees. I ordered an eggs benedict, which had a mostly broken hollandaise sauce. Overall, we didn’t find the breakfast to be incredible in any particular way, but it was still quite tasty and I appreciated the variety.
It was a rainy day in Zermatt, so we spent it walking around the property and enjoying a movie in the room. The Omnia once again showed why they’re so well known for their service. Everywhere we went, we were greeted by name, and the staff went above and beyond to make us comfortable, even bringing up a blanket for our movie. After a nice afternoon, we spent some time also walking around the charming town of Zermatt.
The weather was sometimes cloudy, but we often got to peek at the Matterhorn through our in room telescope, when it showed through the clouds
The final morning before our departure, I ordered the in room dining option for breakfast to try it out. The options are the same as the breakfast in the restaurant, but they bring it up to your room and lay it all out on the table. It’s a bit quicker, and the ability to eat in the room is nice, but I wouldn’t pay the extra 15CHF for it — going to the restaurant is just fine. In Room Dining
Overall, our stay at the Omnia was wonderful, and we’re excited to come back in the future and visit this lovely town and property. For the price of 440CHF, the stay is without hesitation a worthy stop, especially given the outstanding service and location. The beautiful views in Zermatt are hard to beat. Even during summer, the icey glaciers were a sight to behold
